    WMG LOSSES WIDEN IN Q2

    Warner Music Group released second quarter earnings results that show slightly increased revenues but widening losses. Revenues grew 2% to $800 million, with digital revenues up 48% to $164 million, compared to the same quarter last year.

    HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PASSES PRO-IP BILL

    The US House of Representatives overwhelmingly supported the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act (PRO-IP; H.R. 4279) by a vote of 410-11 on Thursday. If enacted the bill would increase the governmental resources needed to penalize individuals deemed in violation of copyright infringement.

    Label Mobile, a Tokyo-based mobile-content provider owned by leading Japanese record labels, reports that its Chaku-Uta Full R full-track mobile-download service racked up a total of 200 million downloads as of April 30.

    MUSIC REVENUES MOVE UP AT REALNETWORKS; GAMING MOVES OUT

    RealNetworks revenues improved during the first quarter, thanks partly to music-related increases. During the three-month period ending March 31st, music-related revenues bumped 12 percent to $38.1 million.

    FOXY BROWN AVOIDS MORE JAIL TIME

    Foxy Brown avoided further jail time this week after she plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of menacing.

    Foxy is alleged to have hit a Brooklyn woman, Arlene Raymond, in the face with a BlackBerry. According to Foxy’s lawyer, Laura Dilimetin, the plea deal lets the rapper avoid a felony assault charge.

    This past week had an incredible female emcee, Invincible in town from Detroit who came through to give us sneak peak on her documentary/music video for “Locusts” as well as preview her DEBUT album, ShapeShifters due out next Tuesday.

    WARNER/CHAPPELL DOMESTIC REVENUE GROWS

    Warner Music Group today reported that publishing revenue at Warner/Chappell Music increased in the quarter by 8.4% from the prior-year quarter to $155 million. On a constant-currency basis, revenue was flat.

    YUNG JOC SWAGG TEAM IMPRINT SIGNS TO JIVE RECORDS

    Rapper Yung Joc has inked a one-off deal with Jive Records for his Swagg Team imprint. Via the agreement, the Block Entertainment/Bad Boy South artist will release the single “Lookin’ Boy,” by the Chicago trio Hotstylz.

    DIGITAL BRIEFS: WMG, WAL-MART, HEARST MAGAZINES

    Warner Music Group has cleared Wal-Mart to begin selling DRM-free copies of its entire digital catalog. Wal-Mart had removed content from all major labels save EMI Music Group when it switched over to an MP3-only format. WMG is the first label to rejoin the service since.

    VIRUS SPREADS THROUGH P2P NETWORKS

    Computer security software firm McAfee Labs issued a warning about a virus spreading through P2P networks disguised as a media file. The Trojan horse looks like either a video or audio file, but in fact is an executable file that serves ads to the affected computer.

    LABEL EXECS TALK DIGITAL SALES AT NARM CLOSING

    At Sony BMG Music Entertainment digital sales are running at 40% of overall U.S. sales volume pace this year, and Thomas Hesse, president of global digital and U.S. sales predicts that the company will achieve a 50/50 split next year.

    TV GUIDE, HAVING JUST BEEN BOUGHT IS BRACING TO BE SOLD

    Days after getting new owners and new editors, the long-troubled TV Guide is back on the block.

    Another sale would be the fourth change in control during the last decade for TV Guide, which has long been trying to forge a new identity as an entertainment magazine, while moving away from what was once its primary mission, television listings.

    CABLEVISION UNIT BUYS SUNDANCE CHANNEL

    Rainbow Media, the cable programming subsidiary of Cablevision, said Wednesday that it was purchasing the Sundance Channel, which shows independent films and other programming, for $496 million in stock and cash.

    CABLEVISION LOSS WIDENS, BUT REVENUE RISES

    Cablevision Systems Corp. reported a wider first-quarter deficit on Thursday as losses from derivative contracts outweighed a 10.1 percent gain in revenues.

    Cablevision, a New York-area cable TV provider, lost $31.6 million, or 11 cents per share, in the three months ended March 31. It lost $26.3 million, or 9 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

    T.I.’S ‘PAPER TRAIL’ SET FOR EARLIER RELEASE

    The release date for rapper T.I.’s “Paper Trail” (Atlantic) has been moved to August 12. The album was originally scheduled for September.

    “Once we put out “No Matter What,” we got so much positive response that we moved up the date,” said the rapper.

    But after six years of repeated delays, jury selection is set to begin Friday in the Grammy-winning R&B singer’s trial on child pornography charges, prompted by a videotape allegedly showing Kelly having sex with a girl as young as 13.

    WINEHOUSE ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF DRUG POSSESSION

    Amy Winehouse has been arrested on suspicion of drugs possession, police and her spokesman said Wednesday (May 7).

    Winehouse’s spokesman, Chris Goodman, said the arrest is connected to a video that is alleged to show the troubled singer taking drugs at a party in her home in north London.

    DMX ARRESTED FOR SPEEDING, RECKLESS DRIVING

    DMX was arrested after speed-enforcement cameras captured him in his bright yellow 1966 Chevrolet going 114 mph on a suburban Phoenix freeway.

    The rapper/actor was taken into custody Tuesday at his north Phoenix home without incident, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said Wednesday.

    MOVADO SAID IT BEST - “WE NEED BARACK!!”

    Barack “Can’t Be Stopped” Obama did his thing last night in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries narrowly missing taking over Indiana but bringing home North Carolina with a 14% lead over Clinton and securing 91% of the black vote.

    Analyst are seeming to agree that Obama has this race in the bag:

    Pressure is on Clinton to find a way somehow to halt what increasingly looks like an unstoppable Obama march to the nomination — and keep the superdelegates from rushing to his corner before the primary season ends June 3.
